Over the last few years, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) has increasingly become a priority in the health care sector, as the push for DEI is directly related to the desire for socially conscious practices that are aligned with the mission and values of organizations. The Homeless Prenatal Program (HPP), a nationally recognized family resource center in San Francisco that empowers homeless and low-income families and mothers motivated by pregnancy and parenthood to transform their lives, has been moving the needle on becoming an anti-racist organization for the past 10 years. With about 80% of the over 3,500 families the agency serves annually being Black or Latinx, HPP recognizes that racial bias and institutional racism are leading contributors to family poverty. Moreover, HPP understands that the struggle for racial equality must be internal, as well as external, to the agency.

In this webinar hosted and led by the California Improvement Network (CIN), Eden Woldemariam and Liz Ruggieri from Homeless Prenatal Program, a CIN partner organization, will engage in a discussion around the organization’s past, present, and future DEI work and how improving internal DEI practices can create more equitable health outcomes.

Participants will learn about HPP’s history of embedding DEI into their internal and external operations, including the process and impact of implementing effective DEI initiatives, such as their most recent effort to create racial healing days and to analyze the results of focus groups conducted on how to better serve pregnant and newly parenting Black mothers and families. Participants will also learn how HPP’s successes and challenges can inform their own organization’s DEI efforts.

This webinar is intended for health care and community-based leaders, managers, and support staff implementing DEI, and individuals interested in understanding interventions to support Black and Latinx community members.
