Community health workers, promotores, and community health representatives (CHW/P/Rs) come to their jobs with varied types of lived experiences, formal and informal training, and areas of passion. Training can support CHW/P/Rs in preparing for their roles and can help organizational staff incorporate CHW/P/Rs into their workflows. Each employing organization will need to establish a training approach that enhances the capacity of CHW/P/R programs to meet the identified needs of the community and provides the tools for these programs to thrive in the overall organization.

CHCF has gathered a variety of resources related to training and supporting CHW/P/Rs:

• Curated list of publicly available training tools (PDF). (Developed in 2021.)
• C3 Project CHW Roles and Competencies Review Checklist (PDF). This checklist includes a comprehensive list of potential CHW/P roles, tasks, and skills.
• Program Design Checklist (PDF). High-level description of the managed care plan (MCP) activities needed to establish a program with CHW/P services.
• A March 2021 newsletter (PDF) shares CHW/P training best practices based on conversations with Silvia Ortega, a CHW/P and instructor at Promotores Academy, and Victor Murray, senior director of Community Engagement & Capacity Building at the Camden Coalition of Healthcare Providers in Camden, New Jersey.
