Small Practices Deliver Results
Investing in small practices delivers measurable results that transform lives. A recent evaluation of EQuIP-LA, a quality improvement initiative in Los Angeles, found that participating small practices achieved significant improvements in diabetes management, colorectal cancer screenings, and hypertension management.
These improvements represent real impact—lives extended, cancers detected early, and families thriving with better health.

What Are Small Practices?
Small Practices Are Essential to Health Equity in California
Small non-FQHC practices are an essential yet often overlooked part of California’s health care system. Typically staffed by one to three clinicians, they deliver more than two million primary care visits each year. These practices are vital for Medi-Cal patients, with many offering care in multiple languages — ensuring that language is a bridge to care, not a barrier.
For communities that have long faced barriers to care, small practices offer culturally responsive care from providers who reflect and understand their patients and their communities. They are often the difference between a family getting preventive care or ending up in the emergency room.
An Opportunity for Policymakers, Purchasers and Health Plans
Health plans, purchasers and policymakers have an opportunity to strengthen California’s health care system to provide better care to Medi-Cal members: recognize and invest in small practices as essential partners in building health equity. The data—and the communities these practices serve with dedication and expertise—illuminate a clear path forward toward a more equitable future.
