Opioid Safety

The overuse of prescribed pain medications — opioids such as Norco, Percocet, and more — is a significant and growing public health problem. Nationwide, opioid-related deaths increased nearly 400% between 1999 and 2008, and overdose death rates in certain California regions are among the highest in the country. CHCF is working with partners across the state to decrease opioid-related deaths 20% by 2019. See all our resources below or view our projects and tools in these specific areas:

  1. Safer prescribing practices
  2. Medication-assisted addiction treatment
  3. Availability of overdose reversal drug (naloxone)

In addition, CHCF has established the California Opioid Safety Network, which joins together local coalitions working across California to share strategies and best practices toward the shared goal of reducing opioid addiction and deaths. Read more about CHCF's work in opioid safety (PDF).
