CalAIM Billing Guide for Housing-Related Community Supports Providers

This updated guide offers an introduction to health care billing under CalAIM (California Advancing and Innovating Medi-Cal) for current and prospective Community Supports providers. It is especially designed to help housing and homeless services organizations learn the billing processes required under Medi-Cal managed care in California.

The guide was originally developed in July 2023 as part of the Medi-Cal Academy for Homeless Service Providers, a comprehensive training series developed by the Corporation for Supportive Housing, which offers detailed training videos and additional resources. This updated version includes new information on the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) and additional links and resources for providers.

The guide walks providers through these five main steps of the health care billing cycle:

  1. Initiating services
  2. Providing and documenting services
  3. Internal data review
  4. Billing (also called Claims Submission)
  5. Payment, reconciliation, correction, and resubmission

Each step has clear instructions on how homeless services providers and community organizations can approach each activity.

Although the guide is designed primarily for providers of housing transition navigation services, housing deposits, and housing tenancy and sustaining services, it can be adapted for other Community Supports.
