Better and Faster: How Safety-Net Providers Are Redesigning Care

To thrive in the era of health care reform and heightened competition, safety-net providers will need to systemize their processes and find creative ways to provide more-comprehensive and cost-efficient care.
This issue brief highlights innovative management and process re-engineering efforts being undertaken by a wide variety of safety-net providers. For this research, more than 25 providers across the country were examined, and 15 in-depth interviews were conducted.
Case studies describe the experiences and insights of safety-net organizations that have adopted Lean, Six Sigma, patient visit redesign, or process re-engineering using quality improvement tools such as the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) model.
