CHCF Announces Tie Kim as New VP of Finance and Administration

Today the California Health Care Foundation announced Tie K. Kim as its new vice president of finance and administration. He will officially start his new role on May 2.

Tie comes to CHCF after two decades in similar roles in philanthropy and in technology companies focused on social good.  He spent 15 years — first as head of finance and later as chief financial officer — at Omidyar Network, the philanthropic investment firm started by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar. In that time, he helped Omidyar build its organizational infrastructure and financial capabilities, create new ways to make program- and mission-related investments, and spin off several successful programs into independent entities.

Earlier in his career, Tie spent time in accounting and operational roles at Deloitte and Informatica. Since leaving Omidyar in 2019, he has served in chief financial roles for two social change technology companies, Benetech and Vibrant Planet. He also currently serves on the board of several nonprofit organizations, including the PayPal Giving Fund and El Camino YMCA.

“Tie is incredibly passionate about making social change and accomplished at giving organizations the financial direction and capability to have impact,” said CHCF president and CEO Dr. Sandra R. Hernández. “I couldn’t be happier about having Tie join our leadership team.”

At CHCF, Tie will be responsible for developing and leading overall investment, financial, and operational strategies for the foundation. As part of that, he will work with CHCF’s board of directors to create policies for investing and safeguarding the foundation’s assets. He will also ensure that CHCF has the appropriate infrastructure, systems, and organizational capabilities to successfully carry out its programs, advance its mission, and make a meaningful impact.

“Addressing our existing health inequities is both essential and urgent,” said Tie. “My mother cleaned houses for 20 years to ensure that our family had health coverage. No one should have to worry about getting the care they need.”

Tie is a graduate of California Polytechnic State University. He lives in Los Altos with his wife and two teenage sons.
