Almanac Editorial Services Consultant

    CHCF seeks an experienced independent editorial consultant to manage the editorial production process for its Almanac reports and related publications.

    The consultant will provide editorial review, publication management, and communications support to ensure reports are accurate, accessible, and publication-ready.

    The consultant will work collaboratively with CHCF staff, freelance vendors, and subject matter experts while maintaining responsibility for the quality and timely completion of deliverables.

    The consultant will determine the methods, tools, sequencing, and work processes used to complete the services described in this scope of work.

    Scope of Services

    Editorial Review & Quality Assurance

    • Edit Almanac reports for clarity, readability, consistency, and adherence to Chicago Manual of Style and CHCF editorial standards.
    • Review tables, charts, and data visualizations for consistency with source materials.
    • Identify editorial, factual, and formatting issues and recommend corrections.
    • Apply plain-language and accessibility best practices.

    Publication Management

    • Manage and coordinate the editorial production process for assigned Almanac publications from manuscript through final production.
    • Manage review cycles and consolidate stakeholder feedback.
    • Ensure final files are publication-ready and delivered according to agreed-upon timelines.
    • Coordinate with freelance designers and other vendors as needed.

    Communications Support

    • Draft website landing page copy.
    • Draft promotional copy for email and social channels.
    • Recommend strategies to increase visibility and audience engagement for Almanac publications.

    Deliverables

    For each Almanac report or product:

    • Editorial review and markup
    • Final publication-ready manuscript
    • Quality assurance review of designed files
    • Web copy
    • Promotional copy
    • Final production package delivered to CHCF

    Desired Experience

    CHCF seeks consultants with:

    • 5+ years of editorial or publication management experience
    • Experience editing research, policy, health care, academic, or data-driven publications
    • Experience managing complex publication workflows involving multiple stakeholders
    • Strong command of Chicago Manual of Style
    • Demonstrated experience translating technical content for broader audiences

    Estimated Level of Effort

    • Approximately 15-20 hours per report
    • Typically 2-3 reports/products per month
    • Work assigned on an as-needed basis
    • No guarantee of minimum hours

    Compensation Considerations

    Proposed Compensation Range: $125 – $150/hour
