Community clinics provide comprehensive primary health care services to anyone, regardless of their ability to pay. Community clinics often provide services in the most underserved areas. Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) receive federal grant funding and accounted for 84% of all clinic visits and 75% of net patient revenue in 2023.
California Community Clinics — 2026 Edition presents data on FQHCs and other community clinics that serve Californians with low incomes.
Key Findings
- The number of patients receiving care at FQHCs increased 24%, from 4.7 million in 2017 to 5.8 million in 2024.
- Seventy-two percent of FQHC patients were covered by Medi-Cal in 2024.
- Net patient revenues accounted for 81% of total revenue for FQHCs in 2024.
- Federal grants accounted for 8% of FQHC revenue, down from 15% in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.
