The overuse of prescription painkillers (opioids) is a significant public health problem. More than 15,000 Americans died from prescription opioids in 2009, and emergency department visits involving prescription pain relief misuse increased more than 150% between 2004 and 2010. In response, CHCF invited family medicine and internal medicine residency programs to participate in a peer learning and training opportunity focused on safe prescribing practices and management of complex, opioid-dependent patients.

In the summer of 2015, nine programs were selected to receive coaching and training from expert faculty and to share strategies to achieve improvement goals.
