CHCF Health Care Leadership Program Announces New Class of Fellows

Program transforms today's clinicians into tomorrow's leaders

Thirty clinical leaders have been chosen to participate in the California HealthCare Foundation’s Health Care Leadership Program to expand their leadership skills and meet the challenges facing our state’s health care system, the foundation announced today.

The leadership program is a part-time fellowship that offers clinically trained health care professionals experiences to more effectively lead their institutions.

Fellows attend six seminars and participate in ongoing learning activities during the two-year program. Graduates broaden and sharpen their management and leadership skills and gain unique insight into the trends and challenges facing health care leaders in California.

Now in its second decade, the program has trained more than 300 doctors, dentists, nurses, pharmacists, and other health care professionals. It is led by nationally recognized health care and leadership development experts from the Center for Health Professions at UCSF and the UCLA Anderson School of Management. Alumni become part of a network across California that continues to collaborate and develop skills.

“The most pressing challenge to America’s health care system is to improve quality while reining in the cost of care,” said Mark D. Smith, MD, MBA, president and CEO of the California HealthCare Foundation. “Responding to this challenge requires skilled and dedicated leadership.”

Wells Shoemaker, MD, of the California Association of Physician Groups and a Leadership Program alumnus, said, “In its first decade, in virtually every health care organization in the state, the fellowship has trained leaders who can see several sides of an issue and work together to make our care smarter, more reliable, more accessible, and more affordable.”

Applications for the fellowship are accepted each spring.

We work to ensure that people have access to the care they need, when they need it, at a price they can afford.
