The CHCF Innovation Webinars uncover ways that health care services and technology companies are creating solutions that help providers deliver high-quality care more efficiently and cost-effectively. This webinar looked at a company that has developed translation technology to meet the needs of non-English-speaking and low-literacy patients.

Polyglot Systems’ team of health care professionals, linguists, and programmers created Meducation, a product that addresses a major barrier to medication adherence — a patient’s inability to understand medication instructions due to such factors as language barriers, reading level, or poor eyesight.

Meducation generates medication instructions in a patient’s preferred language (18 languages are supported), at a fifth- to eighth-grade reading level, in multiple font sizes, and with pictograms for time of day and liquid dosing information. Meducation is able to interface with electronic health record (EHR) and pharmacy management systems (PMS) to eliminate workflow interruptions. Meducation is now being used by hospitals, health systems, clinics, and pharmacies nationwide.

Through support from the Center for Care Innovations (CCI), Meducation is being piloted in three safety-net clinics in the San Francisco Bay Area.
