On July 24, 2006, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger convened the Summit on Health Care Affordability, which brought together experts from a variety of fields to discuss California's health care cost and coverage challenges. California HealthCare Foundation President and CEO Mark D. Smith, MD, MBA, was among the invited attendees.

Moderated by Dr. Mehmet Oz, vice chair and professor of surgery at Columbia University, the three-hour discussion focused on the difficulties of expanding coverage for the state's six million uninsured, while also finding ways to control costs.

The summit featured presentations by:

  • Timothy Murphy, secretary, health and human services, Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • Dr. John Cogan and Dr. Daniel Kessler, senior fellows, Hoover Institute, Stanford University
  • Andy Stern, national president of the Service Employees International Union
  • Steve Burd, chief executive officer, Safeway
  • Alain Enthoven, PhD, professor, Stanford University
  • Helen DuPlessis, MD, MPH, senior advisor, UCLA Center for Healthier Children, Families and Communities
