This 2003 article examines individual health insurance products purchased by Californians, and characteristics of enrollees in a SCHIP-like expansion program in Alameda County.
In "Trends and Variability in Individual Insurance Products in California," the authors analyze individual and family health insurance products offered by the three largest carriers in the individual market in California between 1997 and 2002. An analysis of trends in premiums and benefits of individual insurance products shows that a $1,000 tax credit provided to purchase an individual health insurance policy would cover less than half of the cost of an average insurance premium for single coverage in California.
