The causes of California's nurse staffing shortage are numerous and complex. To better understand this crisis and to try to develop some solutions to the shortage, the California HealthCare Foundation held a forum in December 2001, bringing together representatives of educational institutions, organized labor, professional associations, and care delivery sites to identify the challenges of recruiting and retaining nurses and to identify potential courses of action.
