Free Spanish Health Guide Provides Californians with Valuable Information on Men's Health

Los Angeles mayor and Latino celebrities describe health regimens

The California HealthCare Foundation (CHCF) and La Opinión, the nation's largest Spanish-language daily newspaper, today released "Ellos También Cuidan Su Salud" ("Men Take Care of Their Health Too"), a free supplement dedicated to men's health issues.

Packed with a wealth of information on a variety of health topics, the supplement includes an interview with Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa about the changes he has made to lead a healthier life.

Heart attacks are the leading cause of death among Latino males. Obesity and diabetes have also increased in prevalence in the Latino community. Preventive health habits can help break this cycle. Mayor Villaraigosa, for example, describes how he tries to stay in shape by exercising at 5:30 a.m. before his day at City Hall.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, suicide was the eighth leading cause of death for Latino males in 2002. The supplement includes information on depression, which for many years was a "silent disease" in the Latino community. Substance abuse can be linked with mental health issues. Entertainer José José candidly discusses how he overcame his addiction to alcohol.

Highlights of the supplement include:

• Heart disease prevention;
• Recognizing signs of heart attack and stroke;
• Nutrition and exercise tips;
• Cancer prevention and screening information;
• Mental health and substance abuse issues;
• Sexually transmitted disease prevention; and
• A detailed listing of online and community health resources.

Along with the information on the most common conditions that affect men's health, the supplement includes interviews with men who have incorporated healthy habits into their lives. Television news anchor Jorge Ramos describes his weekly sports routines, and morning television personality Raúl González shares his story of weight loss for better health.

The tremendous need for Spanish-language information about men's health prompted CHCF and La Opinión to team up and produce this special resource for California's growing Latino population.

"Ellos También Cuidan Su Salud" will be distributed through La Opinión and a network of Spanish-language newspapers in California. The supplement will also be available free of charge by calling 1.888.430.2423 (request publication number 1952) or by visiting the newspaper's Web site through the link below. In addition, the supplement will be available through a network of community-based organizations throughout California.

La Opinión and CHCF have collaborated on other supplements on topics including diabetes, children's health, women's health, and health insurance coverage.
