The California HealthCare Foundation (CHCF) and La Opinión, the nation’s largest Spanish-language daily newspaper, today released "Growing Up Healthy" ("Crecer con Salud"), a special free supplement available to those seeking objective information on children’s health issues.

The guide provides information in Spanish on preventive health, caring for children with asthma or diabetes, nutrition, and safety. Highlights of the supplement include:

  • How to choose a pediatrician;
  • Proper nutrition and its role in dealing with obesity;
  • Caring for children with diabetes or asthma;
  • Guidance for maintaining emotional health; and
  • Accident prevention.

Recent data show that among children and teens ages six to 19, 16% (over 9 million) are overweight, triple the proportion of the previous decade. In addition, Latino children are more likely to be overweight than other racial/ethnic groups. Being overweight can lead to health problems, including diabetes, heart disease, and some cancers; preventive health habits can help break this cycle.

The growing need for Spanish-language information about children’s health issues prompted CHCF and La Opinión to team up and produce this special resource for California’s growing Latino population.

"Crecer con Salud" will be distributed in La Opinión and a network of Spanish-language newspapers in California. The supplement will also be available free of charge by order and through a network of community-based organizations serving Spanish-speaking communities throughout California.
