The California HealthCare Foundation (CHCF) announced today it has named David Olmos to the position of director of Publishing and Communications. Mr. Olmos, editor of the Health section for the Los Angeles Times since 1998, will join CHCF October 24.

As director of Publishing and Communications, Mr. Olmos will manage the Foundation's image and build awareness of its activities, develop and implement overall strategy for publishing, public and media relations, and lead development of new online publishing and communications products.

"As an editor and reporter at one of the nation's premier newspapers, David has had a front row seat in chronicling how health care in California has grown and changed over the past two decades," said Mark D. Smith, M.D., M.B.A., president and CEO of CHCF. "His invaluable perspective and communications talents will help CHCF at all levels as we press ahead with our mission to improve health care delivery and financing in our state."

Prior to becoming Health Editor at the Times, he served as a business health writer and Assistant Business Editor, and also covered technology and aerospace for the newspaper. Previously, he covered technology and the textile industry at the Charlotte Observer.

A 1996 Pulitzer Prize co-finalist for his work covering managed health care, Mr. Olmos is recognized as a national leader among health journalists. He is a former director of the Association of Health Care Journalists and former director of the California Chicano News Media Association.

Mr. Olmos graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in journalism and received a master's degree in communications studies from Fairfield University in Fairfield, CT.
