The California HealthCare Foundation (CHCF) selected 30 health professionals for the fifth class of Health Care Leadership Program fellows. The program helps talented professionals acquire the skills needed to positively influence health care policy and delivery in California. Sponsored by CHCF, it is administered by The Center for the Health Professions at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).

"The fellows selected for the Health Care Leadership Program run the gamut," said Mark D. Smith, M.D., M.B.A., president and CEO of the California HealthCare Foundation. "They include physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other health care professionals from across the state with diverse backgrounds and personal stories. What unites them is an intense desire to help transform the state of health care in California," he said.

Over the course of two years, fellows convene in seminars led by nationally recognized health care experts and faculty associated with UCLA's Anderson School of Management. The program addresses health care issues from business, leadership, and public policy perspectives. Participants learn to build and lead teams, manage complexity and change, understand and use financial management tools, and respond to the changing health care environment.

"This fellowship gave me the unique opportunity to focus on improving my effectiveness as a leader," said alumnus and advisory board member David Reuben, M.D., Professor and Chief Division of Geriatrics, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. "These skills have increased my confidence and ability to take on new challenges and have helped me stimulate my team to meet these challenges. I use lessons learned in the program virtually every day."
