The California HealthCare Foundation (CHCF) and La Opinión, the nation’s largest Spanish-language daily newspaper, today released “Todos Contra La Diabetes,” a special supplement available to anyone looking for objective information on diabetes.

The new Spanish-language guide is designed to help individuals and families move through the process of detecting and treating diabetes, and effectively managing it with their physician. Highlights of the supplement include:
  • How to detect and treat diabetes;
  • Ways those with diabetes can work with their health care providers and family to manage their disease; and
  • Resources for obtaining additional information and needed assistance. Recent data shows nearly 1.5 million California adults have been diagnosed with diabetes, and at least 1.8 million more are at significant risk for the condition, including a large number of individuals who currently have diabetes but have not yet been diagnosed. The rate of diabetes is rapidly growing across the United States as well. Latinos are at the highest risk of developing diabetes of any racial/ethnic group. For Hispanic individuals born in 2000, the chance of developing diabetes at some point during their lifetime is slightly under 50% for males, and slightly above 50% for females.

    The growing need for information about the prevention and management of diabetes prompted the California HealthCare Foundation and La Opinión to team up and produce this special Spanish-language resource for California’s growing Latino population.

    “Todos Contra La Diabetes” will be distributed in La Opinión and a network of Spanish-language newspapers in California. The supplements are available free of charge by order and through a network of community-based organizations serving Spanish-speaking communities throughout California.
