Privacy Policy

back print

By accessing or using any Web site operated by the California HealthCare Foundation (CHCF), you agree to be bound by this privacy policy and also by our terms of use. The CHCF privacy policy covers the following Web sites:

Protecting your privacy is important to us. The following statement will help you understand how the California HealthCare Foundation collects, uses, and safeguards the personal information you may provide on our Web sites.

Unregistered Users

If you are not registered for the Foundation's mailing list, nor subscribed for the California Healthline or iHealthBeat news digests, then we do not collect any personally identifiable information about you. We do log your IP address (the Internet address of your computer) to give us an idea of which pages of our Web sites you visit, how long you spend there, which files you download, and the type of computer and operating system you use. We aggregate this information to determine which parts of the sites are being visited most frequently and which files are being downloaded most often. We collect data on your computer type and operating system to make sure our Web sites work well with a wide variety of hardware and software. We do not link your IP address to any personally identifiable data.

Registered Users

Those who sign up to be on CHCF's mailing list or subscribe to California Healthline or iHealthBeat must provide their name and email address. We also ask for a postal address, telephone and fax numbers, and other information about your organization and the nature and geographic focus of your work. We further ask users to indicate interest in one or more of our program areas. This information is kept strictly confidential, in a secured and encrypted environment.

CHCF’s use of this information is strictly limited. We use it to determine which are our most popular and relevant publications across different audience segments and to allow frequent users of a Web site to personalize their experience by selecting areas of interest in order to receive relevant information on that subject by email or when they visit the Web site. This information is not shared with any other organization.

We do not keep personally identifiable information on user activity on any of our Web sites, except when a user downloads a report published by the Foundation or orders printed publications. All downloads and print orders are listed in the user's private account profile on our secure server.

The Foundation sends emails to registered users announcing new publications, requests for proposals, Web site launches, or other activities of the Foundation, its program offices, and affiliated nonprofit organizations. If a registered user receives a text-format email, we do not track how you use it. If a user receives an HTML-format email, we track whether the email was opened and which links the user clicked on, if any. We use this information to determine the efficacy of our public outreach. At any time, a registered user may unsubscribe from the email list by clicking the "unsubscribe" button in any email or by updating the user's profile at www.chcf.org.

Distribution of email updates for CalHealthReform.org and HealthVote.org are handled by the Center for Governmental Studies. The names and email addresses of subscribers who express an interest in updates from these sites are entered into a database at CGS and used only in accordance with this privacy policy. All personal information is deleted from the database when a user unsubscribes.

Use of Cookies

"Cookies" are small text files a Web site can put on a user's computer to recognize repeat visitors. The computer of each visitor to a CHCF Web site receives a cookie unless the user blocks the cookie. No personal information is contained in the cookie and no personal information is kept on any non-registered user. Registered users of a CHCF site and subscribers to California Healthline or iHealthBeat have cookies placed on their computers, which CHCF uses to track downloads and email readership, as noted above, and to provide a personalized user experience. Placing a cookie on a computer also allows subscribers to California Healthline and iHealthBeat to make repeat visits to those Web sites without having to log in each time. To improve our Web sites, CHCF uses a third-party vendor to help analyze Web site traffic. No personally identifiable information is ever shared with the third-party vendor.

Information Use

Before submitting any personal information, we advise you that the information submitted will only be used by CHCF to keep you apprised of new publications, requests for proposals (RFPs), upcoming events, and other CHCF-related activities, including the activities of program offices or related projects. We will not sell your information or share it with any third party. CHCF does not contract with any advertising or marketing agencies to gather individual or group profile information on our visitors based on their personal profile. CHCF does not host or target for-profit advertising to visitors. CHCF does promote the work of the Foundation, as well as its grantees and partners, on all of its sites.

Security of Information

The security of your personal information is important to us. When you enter personal information on our registration forms, we encrypt that information using secure socket layer (SSL) technology. We follow generally accepted industry standards to protect the information submitted to us, both during transmission and once we receive it. No method of transmission over the Internet, or method of electronic storage, is 100 percent secure, however. Therefore, while we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your personal information in our possession, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.

If you have any questions about security on our Web site, you can email webmaster@chcf.org.

Non-CHCF Web Sites

All of the sites listed in this privacy policy are owned and operated by the California HealthCare Foundation, except for One-e-App (www.oneeapp.org), which until recently was a project of the Foundation. The One-e-App Web site is now owned by The Center to Promote HealthCare Access, an independent nonprofit corporation. CHCF currently hosts the Web site and supports email outreach campaigns for One-e-App. For these activities, The Center to Promote HealthCare Access has agreed to abide by the CHCF privacy policy.

View or Modify Your Profile

If you have signed up to be on CHCF's mailing list, you may view or modify your profile at any time by going to the Mailing List page. If you have forgotten your username and/or password, you can enter your email address and request that the information be sent to the email address you provided at the time of registration. The information will only be sent if the email addresses are identical.

If you are a subscriber to the news services, you can view or modify your profile and email delivery options by going to the appropriate pages on those Web sites: California Healthline and iHealthBeat.

If you wish to cancel all subscriptions and delete your profile entirely from the database, go to the Help page, select "Web Site or Email Technical Problem" from the first menu and "Canceling My Subscription" from the second menu. Be sure to request in the description of your message "Delete My Profile."

Commitment to Privacy

CHCF strongly supports initiatives to safeguard the privacy of personal information on the Internet. Questions regarding this statement should be directed to Spencer Sherman, director of communications at CHCF. This privacy statement is subject to change. Please check here for updates.
